Unit 37 Starting a Small Business

This was the final unit of the course. Our task was to come up with a business idea and support with a plan, cash flow forecast and a presentation. A lot of my class mates did brick and mortar businesses but I decided to base my business online, resulting in lower overheads.

This unit involves a lot of thinking and planning as well as having to structure a 12 month cash flow. At the end of it all you will have to pitch your business idea to your class and will be asked multiple questions – so you need to know your stuff!

I achieved a merit in this unit but I will not be sharing this final unit as my business plan is something I have been developing in real life. You will have to come up with your own business, try to be creative.

Unit 38 Business Ethics

In this unit we took a look at the possible ethical problems facing a specific business, I went with Marks and Spencer. These issues could be in logistics, management or sales and marketing. We then had to take a look at the ethical concerns of the communities surrounding Marks and Spencer, this could be on a local, regional, national or global scale.

All of this unit is heavily text based and there are no presentations or screenshots. Make sure you stick to a structured layout in order to cover all the necessary points.

I achieved a pass for this unit as, like I said before, the lack of motivation was getting to me as I changed my career prospects.

Unit 12 Internet Marketing

This unit was all about internet marketing and its role in modern businesses. We went over some of the principal benefits that the internet offers to customers, these are things like; comparison sites, auction sites, availability and business hours. We also then looked at the benefits the internet brings to businesses, these are things like; low entry costs, customer individulisation and more ways to stay connected and communicate with customers.

All of the pass criteria is in powerpoint format and doesn’t involve much writing. We had to pick a business to write about, I chose Marks and Spencers, make sure you choose a business that is actively involved with internet marketing – it makes things easier.

I achieved a pass for this unit as, like I said before, the lack of motivation was getting to me as I changed my career prospects.

Unit 42 Computer Applications for Business Management

In this unit we looked at how to use programs such as Sage, Excel and MYOB in relation  to business management. It involved a ton of screenshots showing the individual processes with each program, it was very tedious. There is also a section about the ratio analysis of balance sheets and profit and loss accounts which is probably the only main bit of written work for this assignment.

So, like I said, this unit doesn’t involve that much writing but a ton of screenshots. It’s ok but you have to know what you are doing with the program before you can take screenshots.

I achieved a pass for this unit as, like I said before, the lack of motivation was getting to me as I changed my career prospects. Oh and probably because this unit was long as hell.

Unit 39 Business Economics

In this unit we looked at the economics that are deeply involved in business. We went over the business cycle, growth, recession and how economies cope in each. In one of the tasks we had to construct a letter a MP about how the government spending could have an impact on our business – River Island in my case.

As you can probably guess, this unit involves a lot of writting but there is a clear structure to all the tasks. There is one presentation to be given in this unit and also involves a fair bit of writting about your chosen business.

I achieved a pass for this unit as, like I said before, the lack of motivation was getting to me as I changed my career prospects.

Unit 21 Business Law

This unit was all about business law, it covered various statutes such as; The Sales of Goods Act 1979, Trade Description 1968, Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 and Consumer Protection Regulations Act 2000. It looked at how consumers are protected by law binding contracts for the sales of goods and services.

The unit is heavily text based and requires a lot of structured framework for the assignments. There is one powerpoint presentation which is still got quite a bit of writing.

I achieved a pass for this unit as, like I said before, the lack of motivation was getting to me as I changed my career prospects.

Unit 40 International Business

This unit looked at all the issues when doing business internationally. This included looking at actions such as free trade, embargoes, subsidies, import quotas and tariffs.

Alot of this unit is lengthy written work with one short powerpoint presentation.

I achieved a pass in this unit. I think this was the point where I really had lost all interest in the course and did the bare minimum, my interests were set in t-shirt design which was a business venture I was doing on the side.

Unit 19 Team Development

In this unit I had to look at how teams are essential within business and explain the many theories such as the Bruce Tuckman Model and the Johari Window. Aswell as researching existing theories we did some team development within our class which involved solving various problems within groups; you will see some of my work in the unit evaluate my team and my role as part of a team member.

Alot of the assignments are lengthy written ones, you can easily make this work look like yours.

I achieved a distinction in this unit because i’m such a good team player, obviously…

Unit 15 Career Development

This unit was all about how I plan to progress in my career. It involved countless amounts of personality tests to find out who I really am and what job would be more suited to me. These tests got tiresome and most of them didn’t give correct answers.

Most of the unit was personalised to me and my career so you’ll have to come up with your own content but i’m sure you will be able to use the structure of the assignments.

I achieved the merit criteria for this unit.

Unit 29 Introduction to Internet and e-Business

This unit was all about the internet and how businesses operate online. I was excited about this unit as it seemed the most relevant and useful thing to know as e-Business is ever growing.

The tasks was a really lengthy one with the assignments consisting of mostly written work and a few screenshots. I was sad to see that there was no practical use of how to make your own e-Business site online, just a load of theory and boring facts about the internet’s past.

The tutor that I had for this unit wasn’t the best, unfortunately she was foreign and it was hard to understand what she meant at times. I have checked back with my college now and I think she has either left or been fired.

The reason for me acheiving only a merit and failing to get the distinction criteria is mainly because of the tutor but partly because I was losing motivation for the course.
