Unit 37 Starting a Small Business

25 Aug

This was the final unit of the course. Our task was to come up with a business idea and support with a plan, cash flow forecast and a presentation. A lot of my class mates did brick and mortar businesses but I decided to base my business online, resulting in lower overheads.

This unit involves a lot of thinking and planning as well as having to structure a 12 month cash flow. At the end of it all you will have to pitch your business idea to your class and will be asked multiple questions – so you need to know your stuff!

I achieved a merit in this unit but I will not be sharing this final unit as my business plan is something I have been developing in real life. You will have to come up with your own business, try to be creative.

      Hey Luke,

I’d be happy to answer questions but I’d prefer it if you could ask them here so we can get a discussion going with other users 🙂

      Cheers.

how many people took this course at your college? What was the ratio of male to female?

How hard was this course in comparison to A Levels?

Would I be able to progress onto an international business course at university after doing this course?

    Can you achieve Distinction *’s?

How many days a week did you have to go into college?

What have you moved onto do after this course? University? If so, which and what course? Work? If so where etc?

    Thanks,
    Luke

      1) It was very mixed 50:50 ratio between male and female.

      2) In comparison to A levels this course is easy, it is all coursework and most of the assignments can be completed with common sense. BTEC is the easy route to university!

      3) Yes. I know some of my class who have gone on to study international business in university and they are due to start this September.

      4) The first year we had to go in 4 days a week. The second year we had to go in 3 days a week but as a compensation we skipped lunch break and just went straight from one tutor to the other. I personally think it is better this way as there is not a lot to do at lunch.

      5) I personally haven’t decided to go to university, if you read some of my blog posts you will see I changed my career prospects and wish to do Graphic Design instead.

I hope this answers your questions 🙂

    Thank a lot!

    I have two options:
    – Do this course at a college where i’ll have to get a 1 hour bus
    – Do a different course which is local which is called ‘Understanding Enterprise and Entrepreneurship’

Do you think both courses would be suitable for going onto university and doing a business related course?

I understand that you might not be able to answer this due to only doing the first option.

One more thing, was it a level 3 course that you did? In the second option they’re only offering it as a level 2.

    Luke

The BTEC National Diploma in Business Level 3 would be more suitable if you want to take your studies on to university and continue that route. As for the 1 hour commute, I wouldn’t worry, I too had to travel by bus. It was 40 minutes travel time, I think it is ok, gives you time to think about things. 🙂

The ‘Understanding Enterprise and Entrepreneurship’ sounds like more of a course that will set you up to start your own business rather than university. You also said it is Level 2 which is normally considered to be GCSE standard where as Level 3 is A level standard.

And yes, like I said above, it is a level 3 course that I studied.

Can I ask how many people were in your group doing this course altogether too? And did you start it alone or did you know other people doing this course too?

    • Jed Hatton

      August 30, 2011 at 12:16 pm

About 17-19 in our group at the very start of the course. About 3 or 4 people dropped out as they realized the course wasn’t for them, by the end of the year we had it down to about 15 people who were actually dedicated to the course.

There were about 3 other business groups in our college, one of them had so little students left on the course that they had to split up and join other groups. I think it is pretty normal for people to drop out in the first year, either they are too far behind on the coursework or they realize the course isn’t for them.

I actually went on the course alone not knowing anyone but as I got grouped up I met some people from my area that I knew so I settled in ok.

If I understand what you are asking, then all of my work is relevant to the new criteria. All I know is that the point system has changed regarding grade boundaries and UCAS points. 🙂

      September 16, 2011 at 12:26 pm

      Hey Melissa,

Most of the course is group work but in my class our tutor gave us the option to do it alone if you we really wanted. This meant having to do more work and standing by yourself to do presentations so very rarely did anyone actually opt to do the work by themselves.

At the start of the course our tutor would just put us in to groups based on where we were sitting using numbers to mix the groups up. Remember, the other students are on the course for the same reason you are – to achieve a good knowledge in business – don’t be afraid to discuss group work with them, they won’t bite!

If you are as shy as you say you are then try to get group tasks such as ‘researcher’ and let others do the talking in the presentation.

I hope this helps, if you have anymore questions don’t hesitate to write back!

Sorry I can’t help you there as I didn’t do Unit 2: Funding for the enterprise. If you have questions just ask your tutor and they should tell you exactly what to do 🙂

For Unit 3, take a look at my work and use it as a guide line 🙂

      Hi Fatema,

Click the link to the download.
This should take you to Media Fire where the file is hosted.
Try to avoid misclicking on adverts and click on “Click here to start download from MediaFire..”
Then a box will appear asking you to save or open – you want to ‘save’ it to your desktop.
Then extract the files using WinRAR (Download it if you haven’t already) and you should be able to view them

      I hope this helps 🙂

haha I do still check up on here, I get an email each time someone comments. I’ve been super busy recently.

Anyway, about the distinction criteria for unit 3 – I just downloaded it and saw that there was infact no distinction criteria included. I must have forgotten to put them in the folder, which is a shame as I haven’t got any of the work on my PC any more. 😦

      Sorry about that.

    Hi Jed
I don’t suppose you have the actual assignments that your tutors would have given you do you. As a teacher this would be very useful. I am using some of your work as exemplar work for my students and was just interested how they structured their assignments. I know you haven’t posted it but do you have a copy of your business plan so I can develop a template for the more challenging students… I promise you it would be used purely for teaching purposes
